TENDERFOOT

Tenderfoot is the solo project of Seattle-based songwriter Adam Boehmer. Fueled by a year-long road trip across the US in a vintage camper-trailer, Adam’s music is marked by sparse lyrics and loose, rhythmic guitar. His goal is to create an atmosphere for storytelling, lamentation and simple celebration.

DINA MACCABEE & THE EXCELLENT SPELLERS

“Dina Maccabee is a San Fran native with a very catchy and unique new CD under her belt. With “Who Do You Suppose You Are?”, Dina manages to put the shoegaze/depressive-ness of Leona Naess, the quirky instrumental parts of Feist and the almost soulful singing of She & Him’s Zooey Deschanel into a blender to create a smooth sound that’s both light-hearted and heartfelt. And most importantly all her own.” — Stereokiller.com

“Dina is working a cafe/folk/pop vein that puts me in mind of Edith Frost, Laura Veirs, and Maria Taylor. Listening to her myspace tracks, there’s a real sweetness to her music and some beautifully streamlined song craft. Also, she’s working with a notably great band. I’ve seen Eric Kuhn drum with Built for the Sea and Sillian Rail and am pretty well stunned by his playing. With Eric Perney on bass and Roger Riedelbauer on electric, Dina has a fantastic working unit.” — Will Boast, onebandband.com

HOLLY MAE & THE PAINTED ROOM

Holly Mae & the Painted Room is a Berlin-based, acoustic Art Folk band originating from California. The group’s lyrics-oriented music and pre-polished, porch-swing sound aim to plumb the personal and ring harmonic with the universal. Holly Mae draws inspiration from myths and tragedies, children’s stories, outsider art, and science. Primary influences include Joni Mitchell, Neko Case, Joanna Newsom, Sufjan Stevens, Bob Dylan, Daniel Johnston, and Bonnie Prince Billy.

Holly Mae was raised on an organic farm on the California central coast. Her childhood was steeped in folk music and she started writing songs as a teen. She began playing out in the 1990s in the acoustic side of the riot grrrl scene, where she opened for Sleater-Kinney at the Goleta Women’s Festival, under the name La Sullen Teen in 1996. After college Holly Mae assembled an acoustic folk band, the interludes, in 2005, and eventually formed Holly Mae and the Painted Room in 2007 in Detroit, Michigan.

SYLVAIN CARTON QUARTET

Originally from France, Sylvain Carton is a multi-instrumentalist and composer currently residing in San Francisco. An accomplished saxophonist and guitarist, Sylvain tours and records regularly with John Vanderslice and a number of groups representing a variety of musical genres and traditions, such as The Mitch Marcus Quintet, Aphrodesia, The Japonize Elephants, Spaceblaster, Khi Darag, Lord Loves a Working Man, Beats Antique, and The Garlando Nonet.

The Carton Quartet succeeds in blending Sylvain’s many influences into an unconstrained jazz format. Allowing the music to veer from balkan-esque metric changes to a subtle latin american Milonga or locking into solid grooves amidst hard-swinging melodic passages, the music of this quartet is anything but reserved. Utilizing the instrumentation to its fullest (tenor sax, guitar, bass, drums) the arrangements pass the lead and supportive roles throughout the ensemble keeping the listener engaged in the dynamic interplay within the music.

The Carton Quartet features Autonomous Rogers which is one of the Bay Area’s most unique rhythm sections. Comprised of Mike Abraham on guitar, George Ban-Weiss on bass and Eric Garland on drums, this sub-section of the quartet is the driving force behind the music.

12/27 – Local Slice Recommendation – The Cat’s Pajamas Presents

The Cat’s Pajamas presents an American Pop Parable.

Monday, December 27, 2010

3225 22nd Street
San Francisco, CA 94110-3006
(415) 647-2888
www.makeoutroom.com/events/

A night of story telling, blessings, words, and the Amazing Cameron Ochs band. All manner of the American story will be told and we will be prepping you for the New year with some deep, soulful, wild tales.

Performers: Mamacoatl, DeCoy Gallerina, Alan Kaufman, Jelal Hyler, Julie Indelicato, Cameron Ochs Band.

MamaCoAtl Chantiko~ She is a fierce force for change and continues to …make this city wake up, shake off its fog and start soul expressing.

“From seductress to revolutionary to Earth Mother San Francisco-based singer MamaCoAtl is a performer unafraid to sing and speak about our turbulent times. Her sharp lyrics are social commentary laced with poems and prayers. She brings the altar to the kitchen and cooks a multicultural stew, fusing songs made out of spoken word, bilingual blues, and the secret ingredient; “jazzmientos.” At her outstanding debut at La Peña’s Hecho en Califas Festival in 2006, MamacoAtl’s stage presence mesmerized the audience who responded with a spontaneous standing ovation.” LA PEŇA Who is MamaCoAtl? From Blues to Son, to Funk to Poetry, MamaCoAtl has worked the stage from San Francisco to Cusco, from Performance Art and Installation to Butoh, Ritual, Musical Theater, and Cabaret. She has collaborated with diverse projects such as Rwanda Women’s stories of survival, and La Mama de Bogota en “Superacion” for San Francisco International Festival.

Alan Kaufman~Not only is one of the most genuine marvelous people in the city doing so much to keep the arts raw and alive, he is in wikipedia!

Kaufman is the editor of many anthologies, including The Outlaw Bible of American Literature, which was reviewed on the cover of the New York Times Book Review and The New Generation:Fiction For Our Time From America’s Writing Programs. His anthology, The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry The final entry of the Outlaw anthologies trilogy, The Outlaw Bible of American Essays, appeared on bookshelves during the Fall of 2006. He is also the author of a volume of poetry, ‘Who Are We?’

Kaufman has taught in the graduate and undergraduate schools of the Academy of Art University and in writing workshops in San Francisco. His work has appeared in Salon, The Los Angeles Times, Partisan Review, Tel Aviv Review, San Francisco Examiner, and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Kaufman himself has been widely anthologized, most recently in “Nothing Makes You Free: Writings From Descendants of Holocaust Survivors (TimeBeing Books)” (WW Norton) and Blood To Remember:American Poets On The Holocaust.

We are very honored to have him at the Cat’s Pajamas.

DeCoy Gallerina~ She is an amazing performance artist, activist and story teller. She recently did an art installation as part of the city hall ceremony for ending violence against women. She performed in the POW!POW!POW! festival and has shocked and stunned crowds with her powerful delivery of words. They leave reeling and altered-for the better. She will bring us stories of Coyote so get ready for the spirits to come in. It is our greatest pleasure to have the joy of her performance on the stage.

Jelal Huyler ~ He started poeticizing some

time ago and realized that it was the only thing he should really ever do… forever. So,

he does. Most of what he writes is only heard or read by a close circle of lunatics

but some things that he has written have earned him titles such as co-host of the Golden

State Slam, Sole host of his own venue (The Mix @ L’amyx),

2010 Berkeley GrandSlam

Champion, Youth Speaks PoetMentor(which means he be teaching the kids and what

not), Mixdeded Milano Cookie Muthafucka, and also Existential Bandit (which is really

just what he has in this moment entitled himself). He also has a hat fetish. His head needs

at least one to make love to per day. If asked about his titles and of which he is proudest, hewill undoubtedly reply “the one my momma gave me, my name.”

Cameron Ochs Band~So excited to have them. i am now her biggest fan. All too recently, this melodically-driven, little blonde began blending the classic feel of early American music (Folk, early Country/Western, Soul) with the sweet shine of Pop. Her storyteller lyrics walk a romantic line between worldly wisdom and Disney charm, and judging by her fan base this sort of thing appeals to all of us.

Camaron Ochs’ debut album “Heartforward” (Jan 2010) was released in front of a sold-out audience at Red Devil Lounge in San Francisco. Just a month after the release, the record’s first single “You Were Late” began spinning on San Francisco’s KFOG, shortly followed by live appearances on Napa’s KVYN and Pescadero’s KPDO. Critics have acknowledged her as a “local gem” with a “velvet touch”, applauding the record and commending its “pretty vocals, charming lyrics… Heartforward is classic singer/songwriter stuff.” She was voted “Artist of the Month” by an SF Deli Magazine fan poll and has been featured in the SF Bay Guardian, East Bay Express, Lamorinda Weekly, San Jose Mercury News and more. She has played well-known stages all over the Western US such as The Venetian, Cafe Du Nord, and Crane’s Hollywood Tavern (Tour 2010).

http://http://www.camaronochs.com/

Julie Indelicato~ She’s a poet, a songwriter, a singer with Fox & Woman, is a member of the SF underground, the 16th street Mission mighty madness and is rocking her own unique musical power with a kind of style that moves and amazes. “girls wear pink and boys wear blue. i wear black. because I like it. girls play with dolls and boys play with things with engines. my dolls survived plane crashes and set up new civilizations on uninhabited islands, building vehicles and shelter from mostly destroyed plane parts. girls are sweet and boys are tough but anyone’s skin is baby soft underneath all the layers we’re raised to believe in.”

American Pop:

As this show will be celebrating all the different cultures that have influenced America over the years and continue to infuse this strange tapestry with vibrant beauty. We will be showing the film American Pop. A 1981 American animated film directed by Ralph Bakshi. The film tells the story of four generations of a Russian Jewish immigrant family of musicians whose careers parallel the history of American popular music. The majority of the film’s animation was completed through rotoscoping, a process in which live actors are filmed and the subsequent footage is used for animators to draw over. However, the film also uses a variety of other mixed media including water colors, computer graphics, live action shots, and archival footage. and be having story tellers, music and poets bring you tales from their distinct and moving adventures.

Detailed Version:

From Aaron Kierbel

“…..I’m an ordinary guy/
Burning down the house/
Hold tight, wait till the party’s over/
Hold tight, we’re in for nasty weather/
Fightin’ fire with fire….”
… —david byrne (talking heads)

Hello there from an ordinary guy who’s house burned down.

What?!

Yes thats right, if facebook didnt alert you to the fact a while back, I along with 4 other lovely roommates had to move from our mission house after coming home one day to find a smoking pile of rubble where our humble abode used to be.

Luckily nobody was hurt….BUT with the hassle of displacement, loss of massive amounts of stuff and no refund of deposit money, lets just say this didnt put a spring in anyone’s step.

After the initial shock, my first thought was to throw another benefit.

After the success of last year’s Bring Back the Beats drum fundraiser (THANK YOU!!!), i thought long and hard about whether or not I wanted to ask my community to donate their time, talents and money to support another personal disaster.

When do you ask your community for help?
Am i maxing out my “Benefit” card?
Am I destined to become known as “That Benefit Guy?”

I stewed on these questions for a while before realizing that this event isnt about me.

First, all proceeds go to the other housemates. I want the focus of this event to be about helping others.

Second, this is about showing how we as a community can come together to support each other when these kind of unfortunate events occur. Many of us are artists, and therefore constantly broke and often living on the edge (of sanity/eviction). Our greatest resource I have found is each other.

Therefore, it is my great pleasure to announce the “Fight Fire With Fire Benefit” on December 7th at Coda Supper Club.
—————————————————————————————
And the lineup is certainly hot:

-BRONKAR LEE (http://www.bronkarlee.com/) is the fabulous mc for the nite. Hailed as a “shaman of percussive voice,” he will dazzle you with body and vocal percussion, drumming, and highly skilled juggling mixed with humor to wash it down.

-PAPER DOLLS (http://www.thepaperdollsband.com/) are a ukulele slinging, three-part harmony singing sensation who leave toes tapping and skin tingling wherever they appear.

-RUPA AND THE APRIL FISHES (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkpuAQIdoD4) are still high from recently opening for Manu Chao at the Warfield and are certainly ready to bring the heat with their spicy global stew.

-GOMORRAN SOCIAL AID AND PLEASURE CLUB(http://www.myspace.com/thegomorrans) are the kinda band you wanna bring home to mom…that is, if your mom’s in touch with her inner freak and likes neo-vaudevillian Dixie brass band tunes, jaw-dropping dance numbers and slapstick antics.

-QUINN DEVEAUX AND THE BLUE BEAT REVUE (http://www.myspace.com/quinndeveaux) plays a highly danceable and concentrated potion of soul, folk songs and backwater blues, backed by a freakishly tall bass player and some seriously bad ass female backup singers.

-NON STOP BHANGRA DANCERS (http://nonstopbhangra.ning.com/) are gonna seriously heat up the stage with their handclapping, bangle-clanging, whirling celebrations of bhangra, the dance music youve heard in all those Bollywood movies you’ve watched.

-ROB REICH (http://www.robreich.com/), the accordion wielding genius we all know and love, fresh off of a European tour with Tin Hat, will pull some musical rabbits out of his magician hat, and is joined by the esteemed bellydancer DEB RUBIN (http://www.sattyabody.com/) who will delight us with her unique brand of tribal fusion bellydance.

There will also be a raffle for really cool one of a kind prizes offered up by some super awesome, and talented people. More info on that to come….

Thanks so much for your support.

I hope to see ya there!

The Red River is on tour, in support of their new album, Little Songs about the Big Picture, and the songs are really really good. You can hear them all at http://www.braverecs.com/rrpress and read their bio, which basically suggests they are a big exquisite band of especially neat people, who see music as a way of life, to be integrated into and inspired from everyday happenings. Sonya Cotton & Ayla Nereo are local musicians who will play after & before The Red River, at the beautiful antique store in the heart of the mission. Sonya’s latest album is coincidentally called The Red River as well, so it’s a serendipitous occasion for her to play with The Red River. It will be a night of cozy sweet soulful spirit-lifting music. Ayla Nereo will likely be showing stop-motion projections (http://www.vimeo.com/1488779) during her set, and it will be the debut of hand-harvested seaweed actually being available for sale at SeaweedSway shows!

SONYA COTTON
Labeled “The Frida Khalo of songwriting,” Sonya’s compositions are deeply personal, drawing upon her dreams, family, and love; they often come from a place of profound reverence for the natural world and the creatures of the earth. “Sonya Maria Cotton … is a really damn fine singer.” –Pitchfork

Little Songs about the Big Picture
Living in apartments in and around Long Beach for the last six or so years, our band has always featured prominently in the landscape of our lives. Jobs, roommates, plans were always changing, but summer always seemed to bring another road trip disguised as a tour, and new songs found their way out. Even when we weren’t recording or playing shows, our coffee table managed to stay covered with half-assembled, hand-drawn CDs, our equipment precariously piled in every bit of free floor space. I’d wake up in the mornings to Bill singing in the bathroom. It was all part of our home.

Still, it has always seemed to me that music was only a small part of (to borrow Snyder’s phrase) the real work of our band. Mike learning the names of all the trees in his hometown, Allison and Kate learning to rollerblade, Sumner filling a room with giant paper cranes, Manny and I always playing the same Beach Boys songs on the jukebox at O’Connell’s, Alyssa cutting Bill’s hair, Dave standing up so straight when he reads his poems, Allen singing Smokey Robinson in his car, Matt doing handstands. Playing catch on the beach, eating breakfast together at Eggs Etc., driving to the mountains, doing our jobs, napping by the window, everyone always trying to pay for each other even though none of us can ever even afford to pay for ourselves. All of that, the music, everything else. There are way more of us than have ever picked up an instrument or sung with us.

Before Thanksgiving dinner last year, at the head of a table occupied by a handful of the people I love most in the world, Manny said a grace that maybe sums it all up better than I can: “Dear whatever, on this world or a world beyond: The mornings are the hardest. But by evening we’ve usually made plans, and with them come our little and big joys. Thanks for letting us savor them in what time we have with each other, and thank you for everyone here. Amen.”

AYLA NEREO (of Beatbeat Whisper)
http://www.aylanereo.com
http://www.beatbeatwhisper.com
Ayla Nereo came from the hills of Sonoma County, a child grown on blackberries and books. The lines of vision and waves of hearing brushed her shoulder one day, and it started to come out as music. … Ayla and brother Davyd (of That Blasted Hound) play together as Beatbeat Whisper. … Keep an eye to the sky and an ear to the sounds around… There is a revolution of conscious hearing, a casting-off of bitter judgment, and it’s in your eyes.
“Ayla Nereo’s voice was shocking in its starkness, beautiful.” ~ Tiny Mix Tapes
“With the pared down sound, her voice blossoms.” ~ The Bay Bridged
“The stories weaved from the loom of Ayla’s mind are gloriously sweet, childhood myths and memories…” ~ The Deli SF

Annie Bacon’s Folk Opera – written and composed on the ukulele, funded by its community via Kickstarter.com, and recorded live at The Tower Studios in San Francisco’s Mission District – is set to release on Thursday December 2nd at the Swedish American Hall, as part of a benefit for the community mental health non-profit Liberation Institute. Santa Cruzian phenom Audiafauna co-headlines and the Seedy Naturalists open.

The Folk Opera is a haunting and triumphant extended musical suite tracing the events of a single afternoon that expand into life-changing moments for a few different people in a small town, written for ukulele, upright bass, fiddle, trumpet, and multiple voices. Described by various delighted listeners as a diverse and eclectic cross between A Prairie Home Companion, Neko Case, Jeff Darnielle, Patty Griffin, and Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town,” Annie Bacon’s The Folk Opera is, in fact, a musical world unto itself, with few, if any, antecedents in musical history. Its haunting and simple melodies, beautiful soaring harmonies and captivating folk and bluegrass rhythms are memorable after only one hearing, and the characters are so indelibly drawn, you’ll feel like you know them.

In just over a year and fewer than 20 performances, The Folk Opera has achieved a grassroots following so dedicated that the live recording sessions were fully funded by donations from avid fans through Kickstarter.com. The live show and recording feature Joe Lewis (Os Beaches, Honeycomb) on the upright bass, Elizabeth Greenblatt (the OSHEN) singing the lead character, Joel Dean vocalizing the Old Man and the Mechanic, Savannah Jo Lack (Ruth Gerson), giving voice to Aunt Sara and playing fiddle, Annie Bacon playing the ukulele and singing Rita, the waitress, Dave Scott (Boz Scaggs, Rosemary Clooney) on trumpet, and a Townsfolk Choir of Bay Area singers.

The evening is a benefit for Liberation Institute (also based in the Mission district) which has since, September 2008, provided bureaucracy-free mental health services to residents of the Bay Area on a sliding scale starting at $1. The Institute has grown to include a staff of a dozen multilingual, interdisciplinary therapists serving an upwards of fifty clients of all ages and backgrounds, including artists, musicians, students, disabled adults, or anyone else who needs any kind of help. This benefit will help the Institute expand its much needed services.

Santa Cruz phenom Audiafauna (“likened to the powerhouse vocals of Florence & the Machine, the impassioned hunger of Cat Power, and the curiosity of Cocorosie”) will co-headline the night, promising an explosive close to an emotional evening. The Elvis Costello-inspired Seedy Naturalists open the night.

Seaweed Sway, presenting the event, is an evolving project to encourage, cultivate, & support creative community through through local music, yoga classes, and nature events.
