Conspiracy of Beards – Salon Fundraiser – Artist Preview

Conspiracy of Beards

Conspiracy of Beards is a 30-member a capella male choir which performs exclusively the songs of the legendary poet, novelist, and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. Inspired by the late performing artist Peter Kadyk and directed by Daryl Henline, the group performs gritty, uplifting renditions Cohen’s songs. Since its foundation in 2003, the choir has performed to dozens of enthusiastic audiences around the San Francisco Bay Area. Notable performances include the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco City Hall and the Great American Music Hall, as well as appearances on PBS television station KQED, radio stations KFOG and KPFA, and national radio program West Coast Live. The group became an official non-profit organization in 2006; in 2008, the Beards completed their first mini-tour of the East Coast, performing on radio station WFMU and at several venues in the New York City area, including the Highline Ballroom and the Bowery Poetry Club.

Transforming Cohen’s simple melodies into complex 4 to 5 part harmonies, their sound ranges from tender to robust. One can hear influences of contemporary, jazz, gospel, barbershop, classical and even doo-wop styles in the unique arrangements by chorus members. Using the genius of Cohen’s words, the Beards inspire the audience to ponder personal, political and spiritual life throughout the show, amid laughter and cheers. The songs have real and relatable meaning which affects listeners in an intimate manner. And when sung by a group of sincere gentlemen, it is a rare phenomenon which touches audience members on many levels.

Shovelman – Salon Fundraiser Artist Preview

Shovelman

Shovelman is a junkyard beatnik, a shovel guitar wielding surrealist folk superhero.
Armed with a collection of pawnshop effects pedals and an old barn-shovel turned slide-guitar, Shovelman plays ol’ fashioned folktronica-grooves looped straight out of the ground. The sounds of Mississippi delta blues from the electro-psychedelic future, collide with the antiquated rubble of lyrical one-man-band hoboetry.

“Shovelman’s music would be playing on the radio if Tom Waits and Les Claypool ever went on a road trip together…… and were lost.” – Chip ‘So Wat TV’ Santa Cruz.

Con Brio’s Jonathan Kirchner on The Music to Freak to Series

Music To Freak To has been the baddest party in San Francisco that last 3 months.  It has been an opportunity for Con Brio to make a small Mission District venue it’s home, and to invite great bands of many styles to share in the action.  Frequent guest musicians in Con Brio’s sets and collaboration between bands has made each night unique and unforgettable.  The band has also recorded each of their sets in beautiful multi-track audio and will be assembling the material for an upcoming live album release later this year, with the goal of capturing the sweat, grit, soul and booty-shaking fun of a Con Brio show.  Don’t miss out on closing night on April 23rd, with 4 great bands performing, culminating in Con Brio bringing out their best moves yet for their final set of the series.

Con Brio In The Press:

There’s a dusky, smoky quality to Con Brio’s music that would sound killer on an old-school hi-fi in the well-appointed living room of a ‘60s jazz aficionado. Since that sort of experience doesn’t really exist anymore, the band’s live shows must suffice. The name—a musical term that means “going forward with vigor”—is appropriate for the ensemble, which specializes in twilight-hour blues, powerfully deployed funk licks and intensely soulful laments. Vocalist, guitarist and bassist Xandra Corpora, a formidable presence, embodies the band’s passionate drive.   – Santacruz.com
