Shovelman – Salon Fundraiser Artist Preview

Shovelman

Shovelman is a junkyard beatnik, a shovel guitar wielding surrealist folk superhero.
Armed with a collection of pawnshop effects pedals and an old barn-shovel turned slide-guitar, Shovelman plays ol’ fashioned folktronica-grooves looped straight out of the ground. The sounds of Mississippi delta blues from the electro-psychedelic future, collide with the antiquated rubble of lyrical one-man-band hoboetry.

“Shovelman’s music would be playing on the radio if Tom Waits and Les Claypool ever went on a road trip together…… and were lost.” – Chip ‘So Wat TV’ Santa Cruz.

Con Brio’s Jonathan Kirchner on The Music to Freak to Series

Music To Freak To has been the baddest party in San Francisco that last 3 months.  It has been an opportunity for Con Brio to make a small Mission District venue it’s home, and to invite great bands of many styles to share in the action.  Frequent guest musicians in Con Brio’s sets and collaboration between bands has made each night unique and unforgettable.  The band has also recorded each of their sets in beautiful multi-track audio and will be assembling the material for an upcoming live album release later this year, with the goal of capturing the sweat, grit, soul and booty-shaking fun of a Con Brio show.  Don’t miss out on closing night on April 23rd, with 4 great bands performing, culminating in Con Brio bringing out their best moves yet for their final set of the series.

Con Brio In The Press:

There’s a dusky, smoky quality to Con Brio’s music that would sound killer on an old-school hi-fi in the well-appointed living room of a ‘60s jazz aficionado. Since that sort of experience doesn’t really exist anymore, the band’s live shows must suffice. The name—a musical term that means “going forward with vigor”—is appropriate for the ensemble, which specializes in twilight-hour blues, powerfully deployed funk licks and intensely soulful laments. Vocalist, guitarist and bassist Xandra Corpora, a formidable presence, embodies the band’s passionate drive.   – Santacruz.com

Mindi Hadan – Siren of Song – Artist Preview

Saturday, April 23, 2011

Con Brio and Songbird Festival Present:
Music To Freak To
A Monthly Saturday Night Soulstice

“Cabaret Scenes” writes “…Mindi Hadan is a bonafied bombshell out of San Francisco with a versatile style and a definite “wow” factor in her performance.”

Born in Nebraska and raised in Texas, Mindi Hadan grew up the youngest of eight children in a musical family which meant that she was always surrounded by different forms of music. From her older sibling’s Kiss records to the Country and Western 8 tracks in the family motor home to her grandparents big band and polka music, her unique style is the result of a  lifetime of diverse musical influence.

After suffering a broken heart that she thought might kill her she decided that there was only one thing to do to fix the problem…sing the blues. Out loud. In front of people.

In 2007 Mindi debuted at San Francisco’s Jazz At Pearls to a sold out audience. Since then Mindi has performed at other Bay Area clubs such as Anna’s Jazz Island, Coda Jazz Club, Cafe Du Nord, Amnesia and most recently The Rrazz Room at Hotel Nikko. She also makes a regular appearance at MBar Hollywood

The Band:

Brian Hill- Guitar

Brian Hill has been performing jazz, rock and a variety of other styles of music in the SF Bay area and beyond for almost 20 years. He’s currently a member of the Steven Espaniola (http://www.stevenespaniola.com/) band, contributing to Steven’s unique approach to traditional Hawaiian music. Brian is also a member of Stymie and the Pimp Jones Luv Orchestra – a 12-piece funk/rock/ska band as well as Murray, RJFski and Hill a jazz/groove improv trio with which he has toured Thailand in the Southern Thailand Jazz and Blues Festival. He was formerly the guitarist with the Kofy Brown Band (http://www.kofybrown.com/) in which he performed across the U.S and in the Netherlands and played on her CDs “Area 32”, “Love Warrior” and “Live in San Francisco – The Mecca Session”.

Spence Murray- Bass

Spence Murray has been a Bay Area bass player for 20 years, playing
with a variety of SF bands spanning jazz, rock, gospel and

alt-country.  His hit list is formidable, including such artists as

Bonnie Raitt, Cake and Taj Mahal, as well as local artists Jeffrey
Luck Lucas, Austin Willacy, Kofy Brown, Broun Fellinis and King City.
In his spare time, he founded and runs his own record label, and
created a popular SF bar and music venue.

Surya Patri- Drums

Surya Patri graduated with a Bachelor of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory in 1999, where he apprenticed with jazz drummers Greg Bandy, Michael Carvin, Joe Morello, and Dennis Mackrel.  Surya has performed with musicians of note such as Bobby Ferraza, Neal Creque, Pyeng Threadgill, Terry Disley, Jason McGuire, Sandra Day O-Connor, Joe Orrach, Mike Olmos, Marcus Shelby and Matt Clark.

Eddie Cohn – Stay With Me – Artist Preview

Saturday, April 23, 2011
Music To Freak To
A Monthly Saturday Night Soulstice

Con Brio and Songbird Festival Present:

Stay With Me is Eddie Cohn’s second full length record and it tells the story of a man struggling to learn how to live, love and find himself. The album is lush, vibey, dark, deep and layered. Lyrically, the songs express what is deep down in all of us: fear, anxiety, hope, love and desire.

Music clearly runs in the blood as Eddie’s uncle Marc (“Walking in Memphis”) has enjoyed a solid and successful career in music for many years. While Eddie shared a passion for music at an early age much like his uncle, the similarities between the two clearly end there. Eddie’s musical influences range from Radiohead, Nirvana and Jeff Buckley to the African chanting of Amadou and Mariam. Clearly Eddie walks to the beat of his own drum.

When he was 12, Eddie was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic auto-immune condition that affects the entire body. Things like that—near-death experiences, catastrophic events—make their mark on your soul, bringing a unique darkness to your life that never fully dissipates. It’s from this place that Eddie writes, waiting for his muse, not forcing the creative process. The songs are heartfelt and personal; the voice is silky and smoky and enticing; the music swells and simmers, pieces laid brilliantly over one another to craft the perfect song, again and again.

“I think it’s important for artists to take the time to discover what they do really, really well.” It took Eddie five years between Stay With me and his last release, if I’m Happy It Ends. During this time, he traveled, reflecting on his craft, adding bass, percussion, Fender Rhodes, Moog and others to his skills on piano, drums and guitar. The result combines a variety of influences from the popular–Pearl Jam, Elliot Smith–to the raw sexual power of African drumming and chanting. As writer, performer, producer and musician for this release, clearly that journey was well worth the wait.

Stay With Me is a glimpse into Eddie’s muse, his soul, his journey and his vision…..
